the Trainers |
| It's our
training that make our trainers special. All personal trainers & wellness professionals work hard to maintain their professional certifications, but our specialists goes beyond the minimum requirements. Every month Solo Fitness & Wellness holds exclusive Training the Trainers workshops to provide our fitness & wellness professionals with the latest information and techniques in a broad range of subjects. Guest speakers (some of whom are Solo specialists themselves) talk about and demonstrate new and innovative methods for us to integrate into our upcoming sessions. Past workshops have included nutritionists, chiropractors, kick boxing, yoga, and movement analysts. Take a look at some of the past Training the Trainer sessions and see what might be popping up in your next Solo session. |
YogaWe all know that the neck bone's connected to the shoulder bone, right? We all learned that in the second grade. But through the study of yoga you can learn how the neck bone interacts with the shoulder bone; how muscles interact with bones; and how joints interact with both. At right, Yoga instructor Leslie Journet and Solo Fitness trainers discuss how yoga can be used in fitness training. |
Gyrokinesis®Solo Fitness trainer Michelle Marroquin (at the left of the photo) led our adventure into "Gyrokinesis", a set of exercises designed by Juliu Horvath that work the muscles of the shoulders, spine and lower body in gentle circular movements to relieve tension and chronic stiffness. Based on Yoga, Tai Chi and dance, Gyrokinesis can be practiced by all levels of experience with nothing more than a chair and the space to extend your arms. |
KickboxingSolo Fitness trainer and certified aerobic kickbox instructor Britt-Louise Gilder (in the foreground at right) presented a workshop on aerobic kickboxing to the trainers of Solo Fitness. Aerobic kickboxing has become popular because it builds cardiovascular strength while improving specific muscles of the body without lifting weights. In the form that Britt-Louise studies and teaches, it is also non-contact. |
PhysioBallSolo Fitness trainer, Anne Lilly (pictured) taught a Physioball workshop to the other trainers of Solo Fitness®, Inc. Even before we began, it was hard to keep us from jumping and playing on the balls. Training with a stability ball is an effective way for creating core strength. Core strength pertains to the deep muscles of the spine, pelvis, hip, shoulder and scapula. This core is the source of the body’s strength much like the foundation of a house. It supports and gives further strength and function to our upper and lower extremities. |
ChiropractyWe were fortunate to have Dr. Scott Duke (pictured) of Duke Chiropractic present a workshop on Muscle Energy Techniques. Dr. Duke led us through typical syndromes of imbalance and practical exercise techniques to correct them. It is important to understand the domino effect that can occur from having weak abdominal muscles and tight hip flexors. This can lead to a series of other imbalances and can eventually lead to injury. This is where appropriate exercise comes in and where your Solo Fitness trainer can make a difference. for evaluation and treatment to the upper and lower crossed syndromes of posture. |
NutritionFran Grossman (pictured) is a Registered Dietitian and Nutritional Consultant for more than 20 years. She is an expert on women's issues, weight reduction, diabetes, cancer, pregnancy, cardiovascular and renal disease. Fran is also a Certified Diabetes Educator. We were fortunate to have Fran speak with us on the interaction of exercise with blood sugar levels and as it relates to Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes. Fran reviewed with us the importance of maintaining proper blood sugar for people with or at risk of diabetes when being physically active. |
BalanceWe had our very own Seth Swoboda lead a workshop on “Balance and Fall Prevention.” and everyone came away with wonderful hints for helping stay vertical and stable. Seth also wrote an article on this subject which is currently posted on the Solo Fitness website. |
NIAElizabeth Johnston led a fun and moving class in NIA. NIA is an aerobic workout that combines elements of martial arts (tae kwon doe, Aikido, and tai chai) plus dance (jazz, modern, Duncan) and the body awareness of Feldenkrais, Pilate's and yoga. |
Gentle
YogaOur resident Yoga specialist, Anna Agostino, led a very interesting extra-gentle yoga workshop. Our goal was to learn how to modify common yoga poses to help our clients with special needs. If you would like to experience a one-on-one yoga session for yourself, please let us know, Anna is here! |
RelaxationMassage therapist Lynn Howard guided us in hands-on relaxation techniques. We learned stretches and massage techniques to incorporate as part of your session. We enjoyed learning first hand how simple techniques can be a wonderful treat at the end of your session. If you would like to experience an hour massage session please let us know. Lynn is fabulous! |
Bartenieff
FundamentalsChristine Zimbelmann led a wonderfully creative workshop on Bartenieff Fundamentals. This is a series of movement sequences which simultaneously stabilize and mobilize the body. Irmgard Barteneiff worked with Rudolph Laban in the 1920's and was greatly influenced by his theories and principals regarding movement and the body. Her work is based on his principals of Initiation (paying attention to where in the body a movement begins), Spatial Intent (where the movement travels to in space) and Core Support (the use of deep muscles as opposed to the superficial ones to stabilize and support). |
AcupunctureNYS
Licensed Acupuncturist, Cynthia Rose, gave a lecture/demonstration to
our eager staff. According to Cynthia, Acupuncture is a method of
encouraging the body to promote natural healing and to improve
functioning. This is done by stimulating specific points on the body
with the insertion and manipulation of fine needles. In her practice,
Cynthia uses the techniques of Meridian Acupuncture and its counterpart
Acupuncture Physical Medicine. If you would like to have your own
acupuncture session, please call us. We’ll be happy to have you
get acquainted with Cynthia’s work. |
ReflexologyReflexologist Cari Nadeau of Oasis Healing Arts visited us this summer to teach us all about Reflexology, and boy did that feel great! Reflexology is the ancient method of activating the healing powers of the body by stimulating the energy zones and reflex areas in your feet and hands which relate to the major organs and body parts. For more information on Reflexology and other healing modalities of Oasis Healing Arts, please call: 212/929-2424 You’ll be glad you did. |

Anne Waxman, certified Alexander teacher lead an innovative workshop on Alexander Technique. This technique was developed by F. Matthais Alexander in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. It was originally developed for singers and actors as a method for vocal training. Today, Alexander Technique is used as a method for learning how to consciously change maladaptive habits of movement, posture, breathing, and tension patterns. Anne reviewed some of the basic principles which are: PRIMARY CONTROL – the first area of the body we move – the head and neck; CONSCIOUS CONTROL – which is the decision to move; INHIBITION – which is the choice to give up unnecessary tension; and DIRECTION – to allow your head to move forward and up from the spine. |
Manual ResistanceSolo Fitness trainer Sara Phillips led us in a very interesting and hands-on workshop. She showed us various manual resistance maneuvers to increase strength and endurance in muscles. Manual resistance is when the trainer uses their own body weight as resistance, during both the raising and lowering phase of any given exercise. A big advantage of manual resistance is that it can be done anywhere without equipment. Try a manual resistance session with Sara, it’s a new way of pumping up. |
Posture Alignment
Dr. Christine Benner of Oasis Healing Arts
in New York City spoke on the importance of a posture alignment check
prior to starting a strengthening and stretching program. As per Dr.
Benner, different torques and misalignments in the body can lead to
chronic muscle pain and imbalances. It's important to identify these in
order to give relief and strength to your body. Dr. Benner is a
Chiropractor and Sacro-Occipital and Cranial therapist.. Oasis Healing
Arts is a full-service company specializing in: massage, reflexology,
acupuncture and other health programs. For more information, please

Posture Dr. Jeff
Linder of Bryant Park Chiropractic led a workshop on Cross Posture
Syndrome. This is a very common muscle imbalance especially for people who
spend most of their day at a desk. It consists of rolled shoulders with
chin slightly sticking out along with tight hamstrings and lower back. We
reviewed some simple stretches and strengthening exercises that can
relieve upper and lower back pain. For more information on how to relieve
your tight muscles and for improving your posture, please contact Dr.

CranioSacral Summer 2005
was kicked off with a workshop on CranioSacral Therapy led by
Kathleen Tipton. It was a fantastic introduction on an unfamiliar
topic. CranioSacral therapy uses a light touch – generally no more than
the weight of a nickel – the practitioner monitors the rhythm of the
craniosacral system to detect potential restrictions and imbalances. The
therapist then uses delicate manual techniques to release those problem
areas and relieve undue pressure on the brain and spinal cord. To find out
more about CranioSacral Therapy and to schedule an appointment, please
call Kathleen Tipton at: 212/517-2952. |

Bag
of TricksFall 2006 was kicked off with a Bag of Tricks. Solo Fitness trainer, Richard Davis facilitated our fun and engaging workshop. This was a chance for each of us to show one another our ‘signature moves’. We’re all known for something – and this way we got to learn a little about each others’ way of working. Now the secrets are out of the bag!

On October
18th
Adrienne Jamiel,
Program Director of the Dharmic Institute was our guest speaker for an
interesting workshop. Her program was based on Yoga in the Female Form. As
men and women have inherent differences – so it seems should some of their
movements. As long as ones’ spine is lengthened and in alignment, one
should stand and move in positions that are right for them. We certainly
looked at movement quite differently. |
|
We were
fortunate to have a visit from
Julie Dial, MA,
Clinical
Applied Exercise Physiologist and Disease Management Coordinator from The
University of Texas Medical Branch, in Galveston. Her workshop focused on
rehabilitating individuals with cardiac, orthopedic and chronic medical
conditions like cancer. Her in depth information was useful in
understanding the treatment choices for cancer patients and how this would
affect ones’ exercise session. We fined tuned our skills to match movement
to the needs of the cardiovascular, pulmonary, gastrointestinal and
musculoskeletal systems. All of which play a critical role when developing
an exercise program while undergoing cancer treatment. |

On a cold
wintry day Dr. Gerald Silverman, Chiropractor, opened his warm
office to us. Based on his book, Your Miraculous Back he
reviewed the ‘complicated and uncomplicated’ issues in relieving neck and
back pain. Given the source of the pain; musculoskeletal or disc related
simple exercises, stretches and limited range-of motion movement can get
you on your way to a full recovery. His belief is to give you the tools to
relieve pain and regain movement. To schedule an appt. please call Dr.
Silverman at: 631/265-0990. His office is conveniently located in the Flat
Iron District. |
|
Stephanie Sohns
and
Heather Snyder
led our workshop on the
Alexander Technique.
The basic ideas focused on the dynamic relationship between the head, neck
and spine. The quality of this relationship – compressed or free –
determines the quality of our overall movement and functioning. You can
change your habits and move more gracefully and effortlessly. To
experience the Alexander Technique do call us to set up your session. |

Post Natal
Exercise
A hot topic indeed! Our workshop this Fall
had the best attendance ever! Why? It seems that Post Natal exercise is
on the minds of our trainers. Solo Fitness trainer Michelle Crawford
led our trainers in a thorough and useful workshop on how best to
address the needs of our post natal clients. Having a baby changes
everything, especially mom's body! Due to the physical strain of
carrying a baby (or 2 or 3) for 9 months, hormonal fluctuations,
abdominal changes, pelvic floor issues and posture challenges, there can
be a lot to contend with. Rest assured, this can all be addressed during
your exercise session with the appropriate exercise prescription. If you
or someone you know has had a baby recently, give us a call for our
special Post Natal Exercise Program.

Party TOO!
Our 2008 holiday party was a welcomed
"pause" in our hectic schedules. We don't get to see each other too
often, but when we do, our time is filled with educational and
informative workshops to benefit our clients. This time, we
found ourselves socializing, updating each other with new projects and
interests and schmoozing a bit. But as we all figured, talking just
doesn't cut it for professionals who move for a living. We quickly
started sharing our "signature moves". So the next time you work with
your trainer, notice some out-of-the-ordinary exercises; they may just
have come from our 2008 Holiday Party.

2009 was kicked off with Dr. Jeanette Anderson of Anderson Peak Performance presenting the facts and figures of Posture Assessment during time of stress. What’s stress got to do with it? Stress plays a role in everyday life, from stimulating adrenaline, digestion dysfunction to muscle imbalance leading to pain. To maintain optimal health a well rounded focus of structural and functional modalities is recommended. To optimize health today, call Anderson Peak Performance at: 212-581-5776. www.andersonpeakperformance.com |
CrossFitOur summer 2009 Training the Trainers Series was highlighted by an unique form of training called, CrossFit. CrossFit is a core strength and conditioning program. The program is designed to elicit as broad an adaptational response as possible. CrossFit is not a specialized fitness program but a deliberate attempt to optimize physical competence in each of ten recognized fitness domains. They are Cardiovascular and Respiratory endurance, Stamina, Strength, Flexibility, Power, Speed, Coordination, Agility, Balance, and Accuracy. When was the last time you incorporated power, agility and speed into your workout? To learn more about CrossFit, give us a call and we'll be happy to align you with the right professional. |
Metabolism
MythsMetabolism Myths was presented by our very own, Reyna Franco, RD. Metabolism converts the fuel in the food we eat into the energy needed to power everything we do, from moving to thinking to growing. Did you know that your can boost your metabolism by adding sprints into your workout or by increasing the duration of your workout? She also discussed supplements that “claim” to increase metabolism. Due to the lack of regulations and questionable safety of supplements, she recommends drinking a cup of green tea and adding chili pepper to your food to naturally boost metabolism. Find out about your personal metabolism – book a session with our Registered Dietitians. |
Zero
Balancing![]() Solo Specialist, Sue Brown, shared with us another aspect of her health practices: Zero Balancing(ZB). ZB is a hands-on body/mind therapy which enhances health by balancing body energy with body structure. It is performed on a massage table through clothing and integrates a Western model of anatomy with Eastern models of energy to promote healing. ZB taps the deepest levels of our body’s energy by touching the densest tissue which is the bone. Because ZB works with the skeleton and bone, it is capable of releasing underlying tensions that can be at the root of many forms of illness. ZB is a catalyst for optimal functioning, it reduces discomfort and pain, reduces stress and promotes well-being, and it is an exceptionally supportive therapy for challenging times in a person’s life. Interested in Zero Balancing? Book a session with Sue!

State of the Art of Health & Wellness
Coaching MaryBeth
Pappas Baun, M.Ed., of Baun Associates facilitated a new program for
us all about Wellness Coaching: Coaching is a conversation that elicits
best thinking and decision making so people can create results that are
important to them. Coaches understand the process of learning and help
create the conditions for it to occur. A compliment when working with a
trainer or yoga instructor when they instruct you to do certain things as
a Coach will listen to your issues and have you come up with your own
processes to change. Interested in meeting with a Wellness Coach for phone
consultations, please let us know. |
