MELT

Edya Kalevis an Advanced MELT Instructor who works with clients to relieve chronic pain, improve balance, reconnect to the core and build body awareness. The MELT Method creates a strong and flexible body because muscles work better when the connective tissue surrounding them is hydrated.  MELT promotes better sleep & digestion by soothing the nervous system, relaxing the breath, and allowing the body’s natural “rest & digest” state to function. It also reduces aches, pains, wrinkles, cellulite, headaches, stress and the risk of injury. And best of all, anyone can do it, at any age, and any level of fitness.

Yoga

We all know that the neck bone's connected to the shoulder bone, right? We all learned that in the second grade. But through the study of yoga you can learn how the neck bone interacts with the shoulder bone; how muscles interact with bones; and how joints interact with both. At right, Yoga instructor Leslie Journet and Solo Fitness trainers discuss how yoga can be used in fitness training.

Gyrokinesis® 

Solo Fitness trainer Michelle Marroquin (at the left of the photo) led our adventure into "Gyrokinesis", a set of exercises designed by Juliu Horvath that work the muscles of the shoulders, spine and lower body in gentle circular movements to relieve tension and chronic stiffness. Based on Yoga, Tai Chi and dance, Gyrokinesis can be practiced by all levels of experience with nothing more than a chair and the space to extend your arms.

Kickboxing

Solo Fitness trainer and certified aerobic kickbox instructor Britt-Louise Gilder (in the foreground at right) presented a workshop on aerobic kickboxing to the trainers of Solo Fitness. Aerobic kickboxing has become popular because it builds cardiovascular strength while improving specific muscles of the body without lifting weights. In the form that Britt-Louise studies and teaches, it is also non-contact.


PhysioBall

Solo Fitness trainer, Anne Lilly (pictured) taught a Physioball workshop to the other trainers of Solo Fitness®, Inc. Even before we began, it was hard to keep us from jumping and playing on the balls. Training with a stability ball is an effective way for creating core strength. Core strength pertains to the deep muscles of the spine, pelvis, hip, shoulder and scapula. This core is the source of the body’s strength much like the foundation of a house. It supports and gives further strength and function to our upper and lower extremities.
 

Balance

We had our very own Seth Swoboda lead a workshop on “Balance and Fall Prevention.” and everyone came away with wonderful hints for helping stay vertical and stable. Seth also wrote an article on this subject which is currently posted on the Solo Fitness website.


NIA

Elizabeth Johnston led a fun and moving class in NIA. NIA is an aerobic workout that combines elements of martial arts (tae kwon doe, Aikido, and tai chai) plus dance (jazz, modern, Duncan) and the body awareness of Feldenkrais, Pilate's and yoga.


Gentle Yoga

Our resident Yoga specialist, Anna Agostino, led a very interesting extra-gentle yoga workshop. Our goal was to learn how to modify common yoga poses to help our clients with special needs. If you would like to experience a one-on-one yoga session for yourself, please let us know,
 

Bartenieff Fundamentals

Christine Zimbelmann led a wonderfully creative workshop on Bartenieff Fundamentals. This is a series of movement sequences which simultaneously stabilize and mobilize the body. Irmgard Barteneiff worked with Rudolph Laban in the 1920's and was greatly influenced by his theories and principals regarding movement and the body. Her work is based on his principals of Initiation (paying attention to where in the body a movement begins), Spatial Intent (where the movement travels to in space) and Core Support (the use of deep muscles as opposed to the superficial ones to stabilize and support).

Kettle Bells

2005 was kicked off with a dynamic workshop by David Ganulin. He is the CEO of KettleBell Concepts: the Ultimate Workout. Unlike machines and traditional weight training, kettlebells teach you how to use momentum to your advantage. The key to its effectiveness is the “U” shaped handle. It creates additional momentum, an inherent characteristic in all human movement. Indian Clubs

Our very own Marc Andresen led a workshop using Indian Clubs. Indian Club exercises involve mostly the upper body (shoulder girdle, core) and consist of swinging and circular-style arm exercises. Because of this, they are used in situations ranging from shoulder rehabilitation to martial arts training. The benefits of Indian Club use include but are not limited to: an increase in shoulder mobility and strength, a decrease in shoulder pain, improvements in posture, hand-eye coordination, and neuromuscular efficiency.

Mat Pilates
We asked Laurie Ann Bulman, a certified Pilates Instructor, to give us a refresher course on the ever-popular Mat Pilates training. It was enlightening for the trainers to be the student again, and to learn the precise way of moving in the Pilates way. Pilates is a method of exercise and physical movement designed to stretch, strengthen, elongate and balance the body. Gyrokinesis
Solo Fitness trainer, Kathy Cole taught a workshop on Gyrokinesis® which was developed by Juliu Horvath. Gyrokinesis® systematically works the joints and muscles through rhythmic and undulating exercises. Movement stimulates the body’s internal organs and different corresponding breathing patterns are integrated. Fluidity is the key. This can be done in the comfort of your home, during your private sessions…no equipment necessary. Let us know if you would like to try this system.

Bag of Tricks

Fall 2006 was kicked off with a Bag of Tricks.Solo Fitness trainer, Richard Davis facilitated our fun and engaging workshop. This was a chance for each of us to show one another our ‘signature moves’. We’re all known for something – and this way we got to learn a little about each others’ way of working. Now the secrets are out of the bag!

 

Alexander Technique 

Stephanie Sohns and Heather Snyderled our workshop on the Alexander Technique. The basic ideas focused on the dynamic relationship between the head, neck and spine. The quality of this relationship – compressed or free – determines the quality of our overall movement and functioning. You can change your habits and move more gracefully and effortlessly. Post Natal Exercise

A hot topic indeed! Our workshop this Fall had the best attendance ever! Why? It seems that Post Natal exercise is on the minds of our trainers. Solo Fitness trainer Michelle Crawford led our trainers in a thorough and useful workshop on how best to address the needs of our post natal clients. Having a baby changes everything, especially mom's body! Due to the physical strain of carrying a baby (or 2 or 3) for 9 months, hormonal fluctuations, abdominal changes, pelvic floor issues and posture challenges, there can be a lot to contend with. Rest assured, this can all be addressed during your exercise session with the appropriate exercise prescription. CrossFit 

Our summer 2009 Training the Trainers Series was highlighted by an unique form of training called, CrossFit. CrossFit is a core strength and conditioning program. The program is designed to elicit as broad an adaptational response as possible. CrossFit is not a specialized fitness program but a deliberate attempt to optimize physical competence in each of ten recognized fitness domains. They are Cardiovascular and Respiratory endurance, Stamina, Strength, Flexibility, Power, Speed, Coordination, Agility, Balance, and Accuracy. Zero Balancing

Solo Specialist, Sue Brown, shared with us another aspect of her health practices: Zero Balancing(ZB). ZB is a hands-on body/mind therapy which enhances health by balancing body energy with body structure. It is performed on a massage table through clothing and integrates a Western model of anatomy with Eastern models of energy to promote healing. ZB taps the deepest levels of our body’s energy by touching the densest tissue which is the bone. Because ZB works with the skeleton and bone, it is capable of releasing underlying tensions that can be at the root of many forms of illness. ZB is a catalyst for optimal functioning, it reduces discomfort and pain, reduces stress and promotes well-being, and it is an exceptionally supportive therapy for challenging times in a person’s life. State of the Art of Health & Wellness Coaching

MaryBeth Pappas Baun, M.Ed., of Baun Associates facilitated a new program for us all about Wellness Coaching: Coaching is a conversation that elicits best thinking and decision making so people can create results that are important to them. Coaches understand the process of learning and help create the conditions for it to occur. A compliment when working with a trainer or yoga instructor when they instruct you to do certain things as a Coach will listen to your issues and have you come up with your own processes to change.
